long trails (multi-part hikes) 07/20/07 6:15 PM This is SUCH A GREAT IDEA!! (I wanted to do it myself but much prefer that you did it :) Could you handle long trails that span many days of hiking? e.g. the Appalachian Trail, or up north, here in Canada, the Bruce or Rideau trails. Some of these are 100's of miles so you would need to be able to accept contributions from different people. Obviously you would need a way to connect the pieces. If I can be forgiven for suggesting designs, you have the concept of a "Region" that allows you to group hikes; I wonder if you could have a class "Trail" that consists of a number of Hikes that are linked. |

RE: long trails (multi-part hikes) 07/20/07 9:55 PM Thanks! I think its a great idea too. I started it, in fact, because I was a little disappointed that someone else hadn't done it yet. I have definitely thought about long hikes and how to best display them. There are a few problems that I've run into, and a few ideas that I've had. Long trails are generally a route through a collection of smaller trails, and all the pieces of the trail might not be uploaded in segments that connect end to end. Similarly, the individual contributors of the trail segments might not realize that their segment is part of a larger system. Currently, each trail page in ActiveTrails shows a list of nearby trails. This list is a pretty good way to find other connecting trails. It does help when the trail name indicates that it is part of one of these longer trails. In the future, I plan to have ways to collect individual trail segments into a long trail, with an easy way to find each segment, or download the entire trail as a whole. A few weeks ago, I was on a vacation in Big Bear Lake in southern California, and found myself hiking a segment of the Pacific Crest Trail. It's a dangerous thing for me to do, as each time I feel like leaving immediately, and setting out to hike the entire thing. Someday. I spend my days now working on ActiveTrails and going on much smaller local hikes. Anyway, thanks for the ideas! At this point, I'm the only guy working on the site, and I need occasional encouragement. I struggle a bit with knowing how I can help ActiveTrails grow and become a resource for the many people that haven't heard about it. -Sam |

RE: long trails (multi-part hikes) 07/25/07 11:29 AM I still offer encouragement - I think ActiveTrails is the the best interface going for user contributed trails, even with funded competitors showing up. I'll keep up with your progress as long you care to keep making it... |
