About ActiveTrails

ActiveTrails is a collaborative trail system where users can discover, enjoy, and contribute information about trails of all kinds. Most of us have looked inside a trail guidebook at one time or another. Inside, the author has collected information about trails, including where they start and finish, how long it is, and what the terrain is like. They might include information about the wildlife or plants seen in the area, and sometimes include historical notes. This information can be very useful when hiking a trail. Imagine if you had information like that contributed from multiple people, including pictures, topographical maps, gps downloads, and even custom driving directions all in one convenient, online location? Welcome to ActiveTrails.

In addition to the information that site users contribute to the system, the ActiveTrails staff has imported trail data made available by the National Park Service in some areas. We do this because we want as much trail information to be available as possible. This information is often incomplete and inaccurate, and does not decrease the need for user contributions at all. We want trail information to be available free, and freely available. Please help us!
