Baer Creek

Take Highway 89 North turn right (east) on Nichol's Road. Head north to East Oaks Drive. Head east and take left (north) on 1800 east. Follow until the road ends. Parking lot is directly below the Water tank. Started at 8:25am on Sunday September 26, 2004. Beautiful day. This trail is covered a good portion of the hike and the autumn colors were beautiful. You cross Baer creek several times until about the 2 mile mark (Marker on Tree). It then becomes rather steep. We ran out of time just past the 3 mile marker. Spoke with a man on the trail that seemed to know the trail well and he said that we were just past half way to the Radio Towers on Francis Peak. These were visible at several points on the trail. We stopped to refuel at 10:15am. We packed up and headed down at 10:25am and arrived at the car at 11:34am. - Quark999

Baptists Draw to Upper Chute Canyon

Warning: This trail requires rappelling, good map reading skills, and good trail finding skills. Good, now that you are excited, it is time to get a load of the trail. The trail is located in the San Rafael Swell in southern Utah. You have to take Exit 131 off of I-70 and go to the roads that are to the south of the interstate. You'll need a local map for more details, but the entrance is near the McKay Flats. The trail starts at an old cowboy dam. You follow the wash in a generally northern direction until you reach a barbed wire fence. The fence is probably for cattle since it is BLM land. You cross the fence and turn right immediately. Here there are narrows to go through and some bouldering. The first rappel you reach is rather short. If you can wedge a wide crevice you probably wouldn't need a rope. For everyone else, rappel it. The basic idea is to keep following the canyon down, rappelling as necessary. At the end of Baptists Draw there is a longer rappel (about 80 feet), into the Upper Chute. You want to turn right and keep going down the canyon to finish the hike. It is also fun to turn left and explore the other part of the canyon for a while. When you are ready to head out, there is only one rappel in the Upper Chute. After this drop, you go down the canyon (a good long while) until you see a sand dune on your right. The sand dune has trees and various plants and you'll need to make sure to not step on the crytobiotic crust too. You follow the wash that shows up here until you come out of this smaller canyon. At the top you can find a trail that will lead you back down to the cowboy dam. For more information on the technical aspects of this canyon and more descriptions, go to www.canyoneeringusa.com - hiram

Big Spring to Rock Canyon via Cascade Saddle

Beautiful views are available on this trail, but you have to work for them! Follow Big Springs Trail from Big Springs Park up to the Cascade Saddle, across the ridge, and down through Provo Campground to the mouth of Rock Canyon. The Big Springs trail is fairly steep, but has beautiful views of the canyon down below. The trail is wooded almost the entire route, and is a well-kept, easy to follow trail. The descent into Rock Canyon is also fairly steep, and winds through green undergrowth and Aspen trees. - TelegramSam

The postmaster was a thrill seeker. This is an old mail trail and telegraph line between Escalante and Boulder. The trail is well marked and the old telegraph line is still intact for much of the trail. The recommended hike is from Boulder to Escalante. The trail head is at the Boulder air strip. The end of the trail is at Escalante off of the road just before the high school as you drive from Boulder. There are at least two companies in Escalante that provide shuttle services for this trail. Water is available at Sand Creek and Death Hollow and often available at Mamie Creek. Poison ivy is plentiful in Death Hollow and is best avoided by hiking in the creek. - hiram

Broads Fork Twin Peaks

Park at or near the Mill B South (Broads Fork) trailhead in Big Cottonwood Canyon (4.2 miles up). The trail leaves from the west corner of the parking lot heading west. There is a nicely maintained hiking trail for the first 2.3 miles, an unusually beefy bridge crosses the creek after the first 1.1 miles. Keep left a the fork about 2.2 miles from the trailhead. A rickety bridge crosses the stream just below a beaver dam and pond near the end of the trail. A somewhat less well maintained trail heads south from the east side of the beaver pond. When the trail fades out keep to the east side of the wash.

Reach a rock pile about 3.3 miles form the trailhead near where the trail leaves the bottom of the canyon and starts heading up towards the saddle between Sunrise Peak and Twin Peaks. Try to follow rock cairns up the talus slope heading for the middle of the saddle. The easiest path to get on the saddle is by heading for the tallest part of the cliff at the headwall of the saddle, right at the base of the cliff follow the ledge to the left (south-southeast) to a chute at the southeast end of the saddle, climb up the chute to the saddle ridge. The harder path is to come all the way up the same chute from the talus slope, be wary of rocks falling from other climbers above you in the chute.

Follow the ridge northwest to the base of the final climb. There are two methods, a tricky scramble follows the crest of the ridge with considerable exposure. At about 10,850 ft there is a trail that traverses to the left (southwest) side of the ridge until it reaches a chute where you scramble up to the ridge near the base of the last steep climb to the peak.

There is a fairly well defined trail that climbs the final section to the summit peak. The 0.15 mile trail to the lower twin (southwest) leaves the summit and descends about 90 ft with light scrambling.

Round trip including both peaks is about 8.9 miles.

The trail is pretty narrow and rocky at some points. It's great for hiking, but I'm not sure if it could work for mountain biking. Bunker Creek - Left Fork

Point-to-point trail from Briad Head Peak to the Panguitch Lake General Store. Brian Head Resort will shuttle for a fee, or you can provide your own. Low to mid technical difficulty, with some short climbs, and steeper descents. Beginning at the trail head, cross the Brian Head Peak Road and take the doubletrack Sidney Peaks Trail. You will make a small climb, and then a descent, which ends at a beautiful overlook for the Parowan and Yankee Meadows. Follow the trail through the trees along the ridge until you come to the intersection of the Sidney Valley Road. Turn right and find the sign for the Left & Right Forks of Bunker Creek. The Left Fork starts out as a nice, rolling, singletrack, but soon switches to some fairly technical descents. In about 2.5 miles the trails meet up again and become a doubletrack. From here, it's a nice rollercoaster downhill for about a mile, and then veer left at the Y for a short climb before you continue down the road. Eventually you'll reach Highway UT 143, head downhill to your left. The Panguitch Lake General Store is about a mile down the road. - hikes_with_bug

Cascade Mountain from The Quarry/Squaw Peak Road

There is an ATV trail at the northeast end of the parking area road that you start on, it turns into a hiking trail that you have to follow carefully. That ends in some thick aspen that you have to make your way through roughly east. After you get down into the gully, follow the bottom of it uphill until you enter the chute proper. Climb up the rocky chute until you come to a large (5' diameter?) log laying in the chute where it opens up a little wider. Just above it is a ramp that cuts back to the south. At the top of the ramp head uphill to the rock face and scramble up the narrow chute. The hardest part is over once you are on top of the ridge at a small flat spot where there's an old fire pit with trash and a big dead tree standing. You can head up staying near the top of the ridge you are on until you hit the top ridge where you can see down the other side to the east. The peak is now about 0.75 mile to the north, stay up on the very top of the ridge except for a few spot where you have to duck under trees. - mscalora

Centennial Trail

A paved rails to trails project.

A popular recreational trail for walking, bicycling, hiking, and horseback riding accessible to persons of all levels of physical ability. The trail currently connects Snohomish, Lake Stevens, Arlington, and points between. Development of the trail began in 1989 during the state's centennial, hence the name, Centennial Trail.

The Centennial Trail is constructed on the original railway right-of-way built north of Snohomish by the Seattle, Lake Shore, and Eastern Railroad (S.L.&E.) in 1889. The S.L.&E. eventually connected Seattle north with Canada and linked Everett east with Stevens Pass. In 1892 the Sumas Branch line between Snohomish and Arlington was purchased from S.L.&E. by Northern Pacific and later sold to Burlington Northern, in 1970. Operation ceased on the Hartford- Edgecomb section in 1972 and on the Snohomish- Hartford section in 1987. To the south in King County, a section of this same abandoned S.L.&E. line has become Seattle's heavily-used Burke-Gilman Trail, and King County's Sammamish River Trail.

The southern most half mile is closed to horses.

Coyote Gulch

This is a watery oasis in the middle of the desert. Big canyon and nice stream to walk in. This is a nice easy trail that I would take most anyone down. All the spikes in the elevation profile are inaccurate, this is a flat easy trail. (GPS struggles in places with big canyons and arches) Start at the red well trail head (or the hurricane wash trail head but the GPS cords won't work out.) The trail is really just the wash so get your feet wet and stay in the wash and don't encourage all the lame social trails. Beware of quick sand and if you want to see the arches and natural bridge I suggest backpacking in. The trail is not suitable for mountain biking. I hear that there is an Anasazi ruin and some pictographs farther down the canyon. - hiram

Devils Gulch, Wenatchee, Washington

3,300 feet of decent across 13 miles of single track make this an exilerating ride, and the trail is smooth enough that it can be ridden without suspension.

Description from NWSource: "Known as one of Washington State's classic rides, Devils Gulch lives up to the hype in many respects. Some cyclists, loathe to pedal the eleven-mile, 3,300-foot climb that starts this loop, shuttle a car to the trailhead and begin riding from the top. To give you an idea of how continuous and unabated the descent is, I once saw a rider complete a one-way trip from the top on a one-speed BMX-style bike. Also, strong riders have been known to ride up Devils Gulch Trail, walk up the switchbacks, and then ride down Mission Ridge Trail. Don't run them (or any other trail user) down during this fast, winding descent."

This trail is not a throw you over the handle bars, every man for himself kind of trail, but because parts of the trail skirt along the edge of drop offs, this trail is probably best left to the advanced riders.

Google map shows a 4 wheel drive road along this route, but it is just a trail.

Hike departs from Mill B South trailhead. First two miles are maintained trail. Cross a stream just under a beaver pond, follow the trail on the east side of the pond and then up through a hillside stand of trees. Trail becomes harder to follow as it climbs the drainage towards Sunrise Peak, mostly on the east side of the stream bed. The trail to Broads Fork Twin Peaks cuts off to the west at a rock pile, keep left continuing south towards Sunrise Peak. Begin turning to the east at about 9600 ft to make the north ridge of Dromedary Peak at about 10500 ft. There are a few places that you cross the stream on log bridges but most of them have a shaved flat top that is very easy to walk on. Most of the trail is shaded with trees on both sides keeping it cool even in the summer months. The trail ends at the mouth of the grotto with the stream creating a neat water fall right in the back. Hillsborough River State Park, FL

Hillsborough River State Park is very beautiful and wild. It is very jungle like once you get onto the trails on the north side of the river. Visibility is quite limited because of the vegetation, which is very diverse including palmetto, pine, oak, sable palms and a variety of shrubbery and vines. The park does not allow swimming in the river because of alligators, but a public swimming pool is provided (an additional admission fee is charged for not campers). The park also rents canoes for getting out on the river. A word of warning: In July, the mosquitoes are FEROCIOUS and will SWARM you even with insect repellent (I used a biorganic repellent, I think it worked well for the concentration of mosquitoes. Pure DEET may be better). We also had a few biting flies. Again, the mosquitoes are so thick you run into them while walking, several will light on you hand while taking pictures, and you feel like you cannot stop walking or you will be devoured. - kurtisk

The second trail in this trip is the longest in the park. It is called the Florida Trail because it was created and maintained with the help of the Suncoast Chapter of the Florida Trail Association. This trail is accessed from Parking Lot #4, near the Spirit of the Woods Poolside Cafe. To access the trail, make your way through the picnic area to the south end of the stationary bridge. Across the bridge and up the path less than 100 yards is a trailhead map for the Florida and Maynard trails. Follow the spur to the left to start the Florida trail. I have included waypoints for all 14 marker posts along the trail, although I am not confident of my waypoint for #13. The trail begins along the river for approximately 1.25 miles. In July there are many very wet areas of the trail that have a few inches of standing water and cannot be navigated around without wet shoes. Waterproof boots are recommended, possibly hip waders, be warned. 2.2 miles along the trail, next to trail marker post #10 is the spur for the primitive campsite. I didn't go down it as it was flooded, but the map indicates it is only 0.1 miles off the loop trail. One more mile of trail brings you back to the 'Y' to finish the loop. The elapsed time from the stationary bridge around the Florida Trail loop and back to the bridge was almost exactly 2 hours, even with the slow navigating through the swamps. - kurtisk

This hike included two separate trails in the park, both of which are on the north side of the river. The first trail was the Maynard trail ( listed as 1.1mi). The trail is broken up into 4 sections by 4 numbered posts with emergency information on them. I hiked the trail backwards starting from Parking Lot #3. This trail really begins at the south end to the suspension bridge, but you walk through the extensive picnicking area before reaching the bridge. The trail then runs briefly along the river. The trail soon turns and heads back along the northern border of the park. In July there are very wet areas of the trail that have a few inches of standing water and cannot be navigated around without wet shoes. Waterproof boots are recommended. The trail ends at the stationary bridge, which is about 0.2 river miles west of the suspension bridge. To close the loop for the Maynard Trail you can make your way along well worn paths on either side of the river back to the suspension bridge. The elapsed time from the trailhead to the south end of the stationary bridge was 41 min with no significant elevation changes. - kurtisk

Iron Horse State Park

A rails to trails gravel path over Snoqualmie Pass.

Iron Horse State Park is a 1,612-acre park that was once part of the path of the Chicago-Milwaukee-St. Paul-Pacific Railroad. More than 100 miles of trail extends from Cedar Falls to the Columbia River. High trestles provide spectacular views of the valley below. The park is open year round for day use. The Snoqualmie Pass Tunnel closes Nov. 1 each year. The tunnel usually reopens May 1 each year.

The 22 miles shown here starts on the east side of Snoqualmie Pass then crosses under the pass through a 2.3 mile long tunnel then all the rest is down hill to Rattle Snake Lake. The tunnel is very dark with no ambient light. You will need a strong light to make up for the lack of ambient light.

There are a few out houses scattered along the trail, with a nice facility at the Snoqualmie Pass (Hyak) trail head.

Little Manatee River State Park

Little Manatee River State Park is very diverse and wild. The hiking trails are on the north side of the river, but the main features of the park are on the south side. You must register at the Ranger Station in order to get the combination to the lock on the gate to the hiking trailhead. This process adds at least 10 minutes to the hike time because the trailhead is located about 2.5 miles from the ranger station, back out north on 301. The total trail is 6.2 miles, plus the 0.1mi spur to the trailhead, and is broken up into 12 sections by 12 numbered posts. I have included waypoints for all 12 posts along the trail. There is also a cross trail near the middle to reduce the length of the loop from 6.2mi to only 2.5mi. On the first weekend, I hike the short loop. The whole short loop from the gate totaled 2.8 Miles of walking, taking 1 hr and 50 minutes at a kid friendly pace with stops and breaks. Between Marker #6 and #7 the trail turns away from the river. Just before #9 is the spur to the primitive campsite, which is about 0.22mi long each way. The campsites looked very nice-- good space between the campsites, fire rings and picnic tables. The hike took 2 hours and 40 minutes for a total of 6.8 miles (2.55 mph including a 10-15min stop at the campsites to empty boots). We started the hike around 9:30am and finished after 1:00pm. Children would certainly increase the time, but dry conditions would improve them. Each of the hikers consumed 3L of water and could have used a bit more, so make sure you bring at least that much water. The back side or the trail is in the sun more so we were very hot and thirsty the last hour. - kurtisk

Montana De Oro - Boundry-Islay-Pecho Loop

This is one of many loops that can be done at Montana De Oro. I started at Horse camp which is found by making a left turn onto Hazard Canyon Rd. off Pecho Rd. The parking is limited so parking across the road from Hazard Canyon is another excellent choice. This loop rides up and over the mountain on East Boundry Trail on single track. Then double track on Islay Rd (dirt) to Pecho Rd. and back to Hazard Canyon on pavement. - jcurrenfam

Mount Superior & Monte Cristo

Though short, only 5 miles, the hike involved quite a bit of scrambling and route finding. The hike starts from the Alta "Town Building" just off on the north side of highway 210, the main road going up Little Cottonwood Canyon just across from the Alta Lodge.

Follow "Michigan City Rd" which quickly turns into a gravel road around a couple of switchback turns before turning left/north on to a jeep trail right across from the snow avalanche study area. Note the power lines running up to the northwest, you should end up reaching the pass at the sport where these lines cross the ridge into Big Cottonwood Canyon. Follow the jeep trail west-northwest as it wanders up the slope. There is a turn off of the jeep trail on to a single-track trail going west at a quick double switchback. This trail climbs up all the way to a power pole at the pass where you can see down into Mill D South Fork in Big Cottonwood Canyon. This section accounts for a little less than half of the distance and a little more than half of the elevation gain.

The rest of the hike follows the ridge west over and around various peaks. The first unnamed peak has some antennas and a small metal box shaped structure. There are trails that contour around this peak on both the north and south sides. The south side is longer but has a nice view of the canyon. I suggest trying one on the way out and one on the way back. There is also a side trail that runs up to the top of this unnamed peak from the north side if you feel like you have any extra energy you wan to burn it off.

In places there is a nice trail along the ridge and others the trail seems to disappear out of thin air. In general, the trail follows mostly on the south side of the ridge. My best advice is keep looking ahead and don't be shy about backing up if the direction you're head starts looking too radical.

- mscalora

[...continued] The stretch from the antenna peak to Mount Superior is most of the real work. When you reach the summit of Mount Superior you will be rewarded with a great view of Monte Cristo to the west. The traverse over to Monte Cristo is fairly easy. - mscalora

Navajo Lake Loop

This trail is ideal for novice riders, or those with young children, but is also a great fast ride for more advanced bikers. Well maintained single track loops around the lake and can be accessed from several points. Starting at Te-Ah campground, climb up to the Virgin River Rim trail. After a fun descent down the drainage, turn right at the Lodge Trail junction and continue east. You will pass junctions for the Navajo, Spruces, and Dike Trails before crossing the road and entering the lava fields. The north side of the lake is an easy, rolling, trail and the singletrack ends at a dirt road. Follow the road back to the pavement, and continue west until you reach the campground. Technically the trailhead begins at the dirt road, and the loop is ridden clockwise (follow directions in reverse), but is a fun ride either direction. - hikes_with_bug

Ponytail Falls to Oneonta Gorge

A beautiful hike in the Columbia River Gorge. In two miles you get to see three waterfalls on this hike. The first, Horsetail Falls is right at the parking lot. Then you hike up a fairly steep hill to Ponytail Falls. Smaller, but the trail goes behind it, which is so cool. You could turn back there, but up the next hill and over to the next ravine you can see Oneonta falls in the Oneonta Gorge. It's amazing to see how narrow the gorge is. You can turn around here and hike back to the parking lot the way you came, or continue down (as the trail on the map below shows) and hike back to on the road. One more thing, the GPS has a really hard time tracking the satellites with all the big trees and sheer canyon walls, so the track below might look a little wonky in places. I did my best. - krupan

Provo Peak

You can drive to the starting point, with any high clearance truck/SUV. Plenty of place to leave your vehicle off the road. There is a small section between the bottom part of the trail that is heading basically North East and the point where you hit the ridgeline trail that seems to get overgrown every year and is somewhat of a bushwhack... but its not too long or deep. On the lower part of the trail when you get to the big boulder its time to turn east toward the ridge. Once you get to the ridgeline trail, the path is clear but steep. Be prepared for Utah Valley's version of the StairMaster to the top. Don't let the short length of this trail lull you into thinking this is easy, the vertical gain is the challenge of this hike. - JeeperDad

Length: 1.4 miles.

Provo Race Loop

This loop is an excellent ride when you don't have tons of time. Starting from the Mt. Timpanogos Park parking lot, you ride a gravel road most of the way to the loop. A section of single track takes you the rest of the way there. Once on the loop, it is best to ride it counter-clockwise (starting to the right). The loop trail climbs slowly to the top, and returns to the beginning with some steep downhills on the west portion of the trail. The loop is an excellent mixture of climbs, minor technical sections, and terrain variation. This is a great trail for beginner to medium skilled mountain bikers. This loop used to be longer, but a section of the trail was removed during construction a few years back. There is a pile of sticks on the trail where the longer section of the loop branched off, indicating that the old section of trail is no longer in service. - TelegramSam

PROVO RIVER PARKWAY

The Provo River parkway Trail is 15 miles from Utah Lake to Vivian park in Provo Canyon. It runs through the heart of the city of Provo. You wouldn't guess that you're in the middle of the city with all of the trees and river scenery. Further up Provo canyon you pass right by Bridal Veil Falls and various campgrounds. Many people enter the trail at the mouth of Provo canyon near the gas station and go up to Vivian Park. It's not a steep climb at all. - Gregp1962

Route of the Hiawatha

Type of trail: Abandoned Rail Road (gravel)
Difficulty: Easy - A rails-to-trails project

An impressive ride crossing the continetal divide through the rugged mountains of northern Idaho. The trail is described on the Friends of the Coeur d'Alene Trails web page as follows:

"The downhill version of this 15 mile compacted gravel trail begins in Montana at the East Portal of the Taft Tunnel, about 2 miles from Exit 5 on Interstate 90. This massive and perfectly straight, 1.7 mile long train tunnel was completed at great expense in 1908. Also called the 'St. Paul Pass Tunnel,' it ends in Idaho at the now extinct town of Roland, where the journey continues down a 2% grade through eight more tunnels and across seven high steel trestles before reaching the Pearson trailhead and junction with Forest Road 456, which connects Wallace and Avery. Along the trail, numerous interpretive signs provide information about the rich mining and railroad history in this scenic passage way through the spectacular Bitterroot Mountains, famous between 1911 and 1961 as the "Route of the Hiawatha" on the Milwaukee Road between Illinois and Washington."

Santa Fe River FL, Canoe Trip

Spent two days out on the Santa Fe River starting from High Springs, FL. The Santa Fe is a beautiful river with many springs along the way. Some of the springs (Ginnie, Blue, & Poe) are located in public or private parks that may require admission fees if you dock there. Ginnie Springs in particular was EXTREMELY busy with college students 'celebrating' Memorial Day. This filled the river with drunken students on a variety of floating objects and made it unpleasant to seek out the springs there. The 'Spring in the River' was really our favorite, because of its location and features. Don't miss this one. Camping along the river is easy and safe as there are large areas of public lands, especially west of SR 47. The camp site we selected had easy docking and had two fire rings for safe fires--we even found some would already laid out for us. Note: Two campers did find ticks after camping so check yourself. The Itchetucknee River is another beautiful feature, a cold, clear spring feed river that attracts a lot of tubers. The mouth of the river also seems to be a popular hangout for the boating crown. There must have been 30-50 boats parked all around the mouth. Canoing west of the Itchetucknee River is not recommended from our experience. The river is much wider, well populated and less interesting. It is also swamped with large, fast boats that 2/3rd's of refused to slow down, producing 2-3' wakes. We had some issues with one of the canoes and it was sunk twice. It was very difficult to get back underway because the wakes did not stop. Progress in this section was very slow because we had to turn into or away from the wakes to survive. I recommend getting out at the Itchetucknee River. - kurtisk

I have included two trails on this GPX. The first is the entrance road to the parking lot, which is not on the map. The second trail is the 'River Trail' which is listed as 1.2 miles on the map provided by the park. The River Trail is accessed from the main parking lot. You can also access the museum, Cracker Villiage, and the Sinkhole Trail (2.1mi) from this parking lot as well. The Sandhill Trail (1.6mi) has its trailhead immediately east of the ranger station at the entrance to the park. The River Trail shares it's trailhead with the Swamp Trail (1.8mi) and the Bike Trail (5.8mi) and I have included waymark for the splitoffs for these trails. The River Trail is a very easy trail that is actually disappointing. The disappointment is due to the fact that it is really a road for 40% of it and the larger loop through the wilderness is really more of a mowed walkway that doesn't see enough use even to develop a trail. It starts out pleasantly enough, but quickly joins a service road to the rivers edge, that also serves as the Bike Trail. Most of the trail is not really wooded, so wear a good had and sunscreen. The dock area is pretty enough (I've included a panarama picture from the end of the dock) but there is no swimming or activity there. You can rent canoes from the Ranger Station, which are only $5 for 1 hr--actually 2 hrs to include the drive to the parking lot and hiking the trail to the river's edge. If you want to see Silver Springs, the enormous spring that spawns the Silver River, you will have to rent a canoe or transport your own the 0.6 miles to the dock. The Springs are well worth the trip up river if you have not seen them from the glass bottom boats in the Silver Springs Theme Park.. I do plan to walk the other trails in the park and will upload them as available. - kurtisk

Slide Canyon Rock Canyon Loop

We started at the Rock Canyon parking lot and took the Bonneville Shoreline trail south. This meets up with the Y trailhead (no biking on the Y trail). Once you get to the top of the Y there is a trail that goes up and to the right (south) which goes up into Slide Canyon. Part way up the trail there is an option to head to the north and the summit of the Y. The marker was written on a tree, and it isn't much of a trail. You keep hiking up, and once you go through the meadow, you know you are getting fairly close to your next turn. At the top, there is a sign that says "First Right Fork Rock Canyon" with an arrow. Follow the arrow down that trail to the left, heading north (if you went south you would end up around Slate Canyon). The First Right Fork trail will eventually lead you back to the Rock Canyon Trail (where you should head down to go back to the parking lot). The first part on the Bonneville and Y trail are a little boring, but after that, it is beautiful. We hiked up to the sign we mentioned and then skied down. The top of the mountain was mostly powder and several feet deep. If you want to ski, I would go the same direction around the circle (you end with the pretty part and the trail is more conducive to skiing). - hiram

DO NOT hike this route during the summer. It's complete heck between Rock Canyon and Slide Canyon because the trail is really overgrown. One has to bushwack all the 1.5 miles while trying to avoid stinging nettle. That part is not maintained at all. To get to the first right fork, one has to take a right on a big trail, cross the stream, and go down a little ways to the sign. The sign says it's the first right fork trail. - wifferjbiffer

This trailhead is labeled as the Alexander Basin trail, which is one possible destination. It's one of the steepest trails in the Wasatch - the 1.4 miles to the basin will take 90 minutes at a brisk pace. The trail is in three distinct parts, the first is a very steep loose-rock area, the second is switchbacks, the third hops from one alpine basin up to the next. It ends at the largest basin below Gobbler's Knob. If you want to ascend Gob's Knob take the labeled trail about halfway up. Lots of nice wildflowers in the early summer. - jl

The 'Y' Trail

This trail is the very popular and much hiked climb to the Y. The trail as shown here takes you to the top of the Y, but there are a few other short trail branches that will take you to the bottom of the Y, or avoid the last switchback with a short scramble. Length: 1.8 miles.

The Pfeifferhorn

Shown on some topo maps as Little Matterhorn Peak Start at the White Pine Trailhead, follow the well worn trail to Lower Red Pine Lake, start bushwhacking up the wooded ridge on the south side of the lake after crossing a foot bridge over the stream coming from Upper Red Pine Lake. Stay on the spur ridge all the way to the top of the ridge between White Baldy and The Pfeifferhorn. There is somewhat of a trail when you get above the trees. Once on the trees head west towards The Pfeifferhorn. On the last of the ridge traverse before the steep section of the actual horn keep to the north side of the boulders, there are a few cairns showing the easiest path, it is 10 to 20 ft below the highest boulders. The last steep climb of the actual horn is easier than it looks, look for chance to get out of the gully to the south for going that is a little easier. - mscalora

Thunder Mountain

This trail starts with some climbing as you weave in and out of of small ridges along the mountain. Short sections of flat or slight downhill make the climb easily doable. The entire first section is wooded and shady. Awesome views reward your arrival at the top of the ride, and you begin a descent that includes riding the top of a fin and winding through hoodos. Bring a small camera if you have one, as this trail provides plenty of photo opportunities. The descending trail has many tight switchbacks, and if you are mountain biking, be ready for the loose material dug up by our equestrian friends. This trail requires excellent balance, turning, and braking control. If you want to park near the paved road, you can ride 2.1 miles up to the trailhead on a well maintained dirt road. There is a loop in the road at the trailhead, so vehicles with trailers can drive up and turn around easily. You can also turn this into a loop by parking at the end of the trail, riding up the paved pathway and up the dirt road to the trailhead. If you are in excellent shape (or crazy) you can ride this in reverse. - TelegramSam

Well used trail. Should hike it at least once recently before hiking it in the dark in my oppinion. (may be speaking the obvious), but there are some areas that I could see somone going the wrong way in the dark. It's popular to hike throughout the night and watch the sun rise in the morning. On Sept 4th 2010 the wind was about 30 knots gusting to 45 at the peak. (my out-of-my-rear estimate as a pilot)Absolutly beautiful the whole way up and down. At the peak the trail is all rock and the incline is steap enough in some areas to make using all fours necessary. My wife was a little freaked but she wants to go again next year. There are some pretty fun and informative youtube clips. You should check them out. BTW my 2 liter camel back was empty on the return trip about 1/2 way down, so I would say 3 liter's would have been perfect. Our knees where reeeeeeealy feeling it on the way down. I'm 34 and my wife is 36. I think next time we go, we'll do a little more conditioning beforehand. Labor day weekend is probably the busiest time of year for this hike. The Timpooneke trailhead parking lot was overflowing and cars that were illegally parked were getting towed. We actually had to park 1/2 mile down the road from the trail head, so i guess you have to consider that when thinking about our knees and water. - lbrandow

Tommy Thompson Parkway, Anacortes, WA

Type of trail: 12' of paved surface
Difficulty: Easy - A rails-to-trails project

This former Burlington Northern railway was paved and opened to the public in 2005. It is named after the late Tommy Thompson, a narrow gauge railway creator who dreamed of running his train along the Fidalgo Island shoreline. Parts of his narrow gauge track can still be seen in parts of the trail. The trail begins by the marina in Anacortes and parallels a busy street for the first half mile. The businesses in this area have attempted to make the route more enjoyable by placing murals on the back of their businesses. The trail then goes slightly down hill through the back yard of an industrial area with less than ideal views. After this, you are rewarded with a trail that hugs the shoreline with expansive views to Mount Baker and the sparkling water of Fidalgo Bay. The highlight of the trail is the .75 long former railway trestle spanning the bay. The end of the trestle brings you to the turnaround point.

The tracks for Tommy's Railroad still exist and can be seen on the Northern edge of the North trail head parking lot. Tommy's Train

There are benches scattered along the route, one area for kids to play at the beach ,one bathroom and one pit toilet

Upper Spring Canyon is a very strenous and very backcountry hike. This canyon was listed by Backpacker Magazine as one of the top 25 National Park hikes in the country. This is very remote country. You will be alone until you meet up with Chimney Rock Canyon where many day hikers like to visit. Find someone with Fourwheel drive to ferry you up sand creek and holt draw to an old jeep trail. Follow a contour around until you can drop down into the canyon. There are two huge pours that are passable on the south (right) of the canyon. The first is approx 250 ft and the second is approx 50 ft. Pack your own water. In the summer the heat can be unbearable as the canyon runs east-west and has full exposure most of the day. Spring and fall are great times of the year to travel this route. The views in the canyon are spectacular. The canyon opens up to around 100 to 150 yards after the second pour with walls that rise to around 500 feet. We saw lots of deer and turkey tracks in the streambed. - markellett

Wardsworth is an excellent singletrack that winds up Jux Canyon to a meadow and a small pond. The Wardsworth trail is a fairly technical uphill climb that turns into an excellent downhill ride for an out and back. The larger river crossings have bridges, and the smaller ones area easy to cross. Wardsworth is an incredible climb, but leads out into nice meadow singletrack as you cross the top and continue down the Dry Fork trail. The first section of the Dry fork trail is very steep, and can get torn up a little bit by horses. The trail is a very techincal downhill ride with numerous stream crossings. If there is water in the stream, don't plan on keeping your feet dry! The Dry Fork trail ends at the Right Fork Hobble Creek Road, and it's a short ride back to your car. - TelegramSam

White Baldy via Red Pine Canyon

This is a nice, forest service maintained trail up to the Lower Red Pine Lake. Follow steeper and more faint, unmaintained trail from south end of lake just after crossing bridge towards the south. The trail mostly stays near the crown of the spur ridge and gets steeper as it approaches the long ridge between Pfeifferhorn and White Baldy. The Wasatch Eleveners book trail follows the trail all the way until the that ridge is topped, this track take a shortcut across the boulder field and tops the ridge closer to White Baldy. Continue following the ridge all the way around the boulder field above Upper Red Pine Lake to the summit. Some of the ridge is challenging scramble and some of the flatter sections are fairly easy going. In general, stay close to the crown of the ridge. This peak is more easily climbed from White Pine Canyon, see the Red Baldy trail and Red Baldy to White Baldy traverse. Note: track and length shown are one way - mscalora

This corridor is known as the Whitehorse Trail and will be linked to the Centennial Trail at Haller bridge north of Arlington. It is a non-motorized trail. When the Whitehorse Trail is completed, it will add an additional 27 miles of trail to the Snohomish County regional trail system.

The trail surface has both hard packed and loose gravel. Its flat but not smooth. The trail follows near the North Fork of the Stilliguamish River and has some good spots to see the river and wildlife. There are one or two places with views of the impressive White Horse mountain.

There are no bathroom facilities on this trail.

Wonderland Trail (Longmire to Narada Falls)

The Wonderland Trail goes completely around Mount Rainier. This portion of the trail starts at the Longmire Museum and goes until Narada Falls. On this portion, you also pass Cougar Rock Campground, Carter Falls, and Madcap Falls. There were some serious floods in November 2006, so parts of this trail were newly blazed. But overall, a great hike. - geomattino

Y Mountain Peak Trail

If you've never hiked past the Y, then this trail is for you. It leads past the Y around into Slide Canyon, through Bear Flats Meadow, and up a steep trail that leads to the very top of Y Mountain. It is a very strenuous hike, but well worth the trip. Bring lunch and enjoy a great view of Utah Valley, from Mt. Timpanogos in the North to Mt. Nebo in the South. - TelegramSam
